UseOfComputer.in is a tutorial website — my job here is to teach Excel, Tally and computer skills, not to collect your data. But like almost every website, some information does get collected automatically through ads, analytics and comments. This page explains exactly what, why, and what control you have over it. I’ve written it in plain language so you can actually understand it.
What I collect directly
Very little, honestly. There are only two places where you give me information yourself:
Comments — When you comment on an article, WordPress saves your name, email address and the comment text. Your email is never shown publicly and I don’t send marketing emails to it. An anonymized string created from your email (called a hash) may be shared with the Gravatar service to check if you have a profile picture there.
Contact page — If you message me, I receive your name, email and message. I use it only to reply to you. I don’t add you to any list or share it with anyone.
What gets collected automatically
Google Analytics — I use Google Analytics (through Google Site Kit) to understand which articles people find useful — things like which pages are visited, from which city, on which device, and how long people stay. This data is aggregated; I see numbers and trends, not individual identities. It helps me decide which tutorials to write or update next.
Server logs — Like every website, the hosting server automatically records basic technical details such as IP address, browser type, and date/time of visits. This is standard for security and troubleshooting.
Advertising and cookies (please read this one)
This website shows ads through Google AdSense. This is how the site stays free and how I cover hosting costs.
Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site. Google’s advertising cookies (including the DoubleClick DART cookie) enable it and its partners to show you ads based on your visit to this site and other websites on the internet. This is why you sometimes see ads related to something you searched for earlier — that’s Google’s system, not me. I never see your personal browsing data.
You can control this:
- Opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings
- Opt out of many third-party advertising cookies at aboutads.info/choices
- Read how Google uses data from partner sites: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
Some pages may also contain affiliate links. Clicking one may set a cookie so the merchant knows the visit came from my site. You pay nothing extra; details are on the Disclaimer page.
Cookies in general
Cookies are small text files stored in your browser. On this site they come from three sources: WordPress (e.g. remembering your name for the next comment), Google Analytics (visit statistics) and Google AdSense (advertising, explained above).
You can delete or block cookies anytime from your browser settings — every browser has this option, usually under Privacy or Site Settings. The site will still work; at most, ads become less relevant and you’ll have to re-type your name when commenting.
Downloads
The free PDF guides and Excel templates on this site don’t require your email or any registration. Click and download — that’s it. I deliberately keep it this way.
Children’s privacy
This website teaches computer skills and is safe for students, but I don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted personal information here (for example through a comment), contact me and I’ll remove it.
What I never do
I don’t sell, rent or trade your personal information to anyone. I don’t send newsletters or promotional emails. I don’t ask for payment information anywhere on this site — if any page ever asks you for card details claiming to be Use of Computer, it’s fake; please report it to me.
Your rights
If you’ve ever commented or contacted me, you can ask me to show you that data, correct it, or delete it completely. Just message me through the Contact page and I’ll do it — usually within a few days.
External links
Articles often link to other websites (official download pages, documentation, YouTube). Once you leave this site, their privacy policies apply, not this one.
Changes to this policy
If something changes — for example, if I ever add a newsletter or a new ad network — I’ll update this page and change the date at the top. Big changes will also be mentioned on the site.
Contact
Any question about your privacy on this site, reach me through the Contact page. Privacy questions get priority over everything else in my inbox.
